That win represented the first Kentucky Derby victory for trainer Eric Reed. However, the surprise winner closed in and passed both favorites to hit the line ahead by nearly a full length in front of a roaring crowd. Zandon (6-1) surged up the outside to challenge Epicenter, which appeared to open the inside rail for a ferocious close from Rich Strike. The favorite, Epicenter (4-1), had emerged from a tightly packed bunch to take the lead at the exit of the final turn. Only Donerail, in 1913’s edition of this historic event, was a bigger underdog when the gates opened to commence the race. According to the Kentucky Derby’s website, Rich Strike has the second-longest odds of any Derby winner. History was made at the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby in 2022, as Rich Strike closed hard down the stretch to win the race as an 80-1 long shot.
